Ask most people when they last saw a dentist and the answer is usually the same: “when my tooth was aching.” By the time a tooth aches, decay has typically been developing quietly for months or years — and what could have been a simple, painless filling has become a root canal or an extraction. At the Kagio Hospital Dental Unit, our happiest patients are the ones we see twice a year, not the ones we meet in pain at midnight.

What actually happens at a dental check-up?

  • Full examination of every tooth, your gums, tongue and mouth lining — including screening for early signs of oral cancer
  • Early decay detection, often with digital dental X-rays that reveal problems invisible to the eye
  • Professional cleaning (scaling) to remove hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing cannot — the main driver of gum disease and bad breath
  • Personal advice on brushing technique, diet and any habits affecting your teeth

The entire visit is comfortable, takes under an hour, and usually costs far less than a single emergency extraction.

Your mouth talks to your whole body

Oral health is not cosmetic. Research links untreated gum disease with heart disease, poorly controlled diabetes, and complications in pregnancy including low birth weight. Chronic dental infection is a constant, silent burden on your immune system. Caring for your teeth is caring for your body.

Children's teeth: start earlier than you think

  1. First visit by the first birthday. Early visits build familiarity, so children learn the dental chair is a friendly place — not a punishment when in pain.
  2. Milk teeth matter. “They will fall out anyway” is a costly myth — decayed milk teeth cause pain, infection and crooked permanent teeth.
  3. Watch the sugar. Sweets, biscuits and especially sugary drinks between meals are the biggest cause of childhood decay. Juice in a feeding bottle at bedtime is particularly damaging.
  4. Brush for them, then with them. Children lack the coordination to brush well until around age 8 — supervise with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, morning and night.

Daily habits that keep the dentist away

  • Brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste — the last brush at night, with nothing but water afterwards
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes, and rinse with water afterwards
  • Never use your teeth as tools — bottle tops have paid for many crowns
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months
Prevention is always cheaper, faster and more comfortable than cure — nowhere more so than in dentistry.
